We are Purposed! (You're Supposed to Be Here)

Growing up, I struggled with thinking of myself as a burden.  I'd hear things about my father wanting my mother to have an abortion and how she made the decision to keep me...(you get it, the stuff that goes on between two adults when a baby comes into the picture and the couple doesn't work out). I had a deep seeded feeling of, my mom's life, my sister's life,  everyone's life would be better without me here.

Pair that with some other things that happened in my childhood and what do you get? A recipe for self-rejection. Feelings of "why am I here?" and "why doesn't anyone love me?"or maybe "I wasn't meant to be here", these are rejection. And this is also a direct insult to God. We replay these thoughts and feelings in our heads and we don't do it in direct opposition to God, but that's what it is. We are not only hurting ourselves with these thoughts, we are hurting Him.

After getting saved, I remember one day I was praying, and I saw myself as a baby, just born in the delivery room. And God was happy. If you could imagine God smiling, He was. And I cried and cried. Because I realized deep down inside, I had always associated my birth with sadness. My birth may have been the end of a thing, but it was also a bright beginning too! And so is the case with each life. You see, no matter the circumstances in which we enter this world - we are purposed! We are MEANT TO BE! Our conception was no accident. Our making it in our mother's womb is no accident. Making it through the birthing process and out into the world - this is also NO ACCIDENT.

As I grow in God, as I read His Word, I am beginning to see me. I'm in there. And so are you. Jesus was conceived outside of wedlock. So were many of us. He was the "black sheep" of the family. I can raise my hand and say, so am I! As I was reading last night, the Lord told me that from my birth, He put X in me to do and to be. Also, from my birth, the enemy, opposition (whatever you want to call him or it) has been trying to distract me with Y - why was I born? Why doesn't my father want me? Why doesn't my mother love me? Why...why...why. I have to focus on X and staying on the path to X because you know what? Y doesn't matter. It does NOT matter.

God put something special in each of us. We are each a word from His lips sent to this earth. He smiled when you were born. He loved you even then. It doesn't matter if you were born in a shoe. God loved it and thought it good because you are HERE. As long as you are here, He can guide you to X if you can push and not allow the distractions of Y to permanently occupy you.

You may be the person in your generation that changes everything. You could be the one that breaks every negative cycle or your child could be that one.  Know you are loved. Know you are necessary. Another life is deeply affected because you breathe. Someone else in this world, somewhere, needs you to be here.

Walk Changing Reading

So, I bought my first book from one of my pastors' mentors,  the late Pastor Kelley Varner, Freedom from 12 Deadly Sins. It's not what I expected at all, it's far better. It's not talking about what is often defined as the 12 deadly sins, but the different impediments you may encounter at each stage of your walk as a Christian. For example, one sin is legalism.

I am just into the first chapter and as with my pastor's books, it is conversational,  it's almost like I hear Pastor Varner ministering as I read (and mind you, I never met him). It is encouraging, honest, and most importantly founded in the word and revelation from God. It's awesome so far and I recommend it! I can't wait to read more!

Writer's Block: Learning How to Put My Heart into Words

Well, as some of you may know, I'm not just one who blogs, but I write poetry, stories, and even the occasional song. I've written for a long time, since I was a little girl and I believe it's one of my God given gifts. That being said, outside of poems and short stories, I have struggled with seeing being projects come to fruition. This latest project is close to my heart, but each time I go to add the finishing pieces - I feel a blockage. I have conversations with my husband and I'll say things that could go in the book. He's like "THAT'S your commentary!!" But when I sit down to work on it - it seems so hard.

How do I translate my heart to the page?

"Martha" Syndrome

Last week, my pastor asked me to prepare a five minute word for church. I was nervous and a little worried I wouldn't have anything. This came after a word that I needed to be more like Mary and less like Martha. So, during the week, I really mused on what was said and at first, I was feeling all kinds of distressed. Then I buckled down and began to study. I read and studied out several things, but I didn't feel settled about it being the word God wanted me to share. As part of my preparation, I also fasted. On the last day of my fast, I was praying and lo and behold, Luke 10:38-42 came to mind. I felt the Lord wanted me to study it out and share what I learned. Here's the scripture below:

Luke 10:38-42 (KJV)
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

I want to pull out the words I bolded. "Cumbered" literally translates, was pulled about or was distracted. In the Greek, it means to drag all around, i.e. to distract (with care).

Serving means attendance (as a servant, etc), figuratively aid, (official) service (especially of the Christian teacher, or technically of the diaconate (that is, deacons)).

Careful does not mean what it does in the English, it means to be anxious about something in the Greek.

Needful means employment, i.e. an affair or occasion, demand, requirement, or destitution.

To pull it all together, Jesus gently corrected Martha and let her know that Mary choose the "good part", that which cannot be taken away or wrested from her. Yes, we need people to serve in the church - this is all very important, but individually and corporately, our JOB, our EMPLOYMENT, our REQUIREMENT is to first sit at the feet of Jesus.

Lord knows, this is a corrective word to me. All the various roles I must fill should never ever trump my first role - disciple of Christ. It is a challenge to me and anyone else who loves the Lord to first, sit at His feet. The things we will gain from this time spent with Him, the things He'll have a chance to speak to us - these things can never be taken from us. We can lose our natural employment, burn up that meal we neglected the Lord to cook, but that time spent...not to quote a commercial, but it is truly priceless.

The Importance of a Father

I was sitting here working on other things, but I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts on this matter - the importance of a father.

I have my Dad in my life, but it was not always a stable nor consistent presence due to circumstances beyond my control. My mother and father's relationship was pretty much over before I was born and though I think they made an attempt to make it work (from what I've heard anyway), I never recall a time when my  mother and father were together as a couple.  I would say that for the most part, my mom raised me, but that wouldn't be all the way true either. You see, just to give a little background, from what I know my mom was there until I was about 2 years old. Then she got a job in California and left my older sister and I with her sister (my aunt) and the maternal side of the family. I remember my mom coming through intermittently, but for the first years of life, my world consisted of my aunt, my older sister, my grandma, great grandma, and my uncles. Dad was sprinkled in there, but I don't really remember much.

Then my mom came back right around the time I started school. It was an adjustment period. My mom got a job on the same state as us, but it was two hours away. She had an apartment there and my sister and I lived with my aunt. My mom would visit on the weekends. Eventually, she moved back into the house with my sister, aunt, and I. It was rough. The sisters (my mom and aunt) clashed at times. Lifestyle and personality differences were to blame. My mom hadn't had to deal with children full-time in years. I imagine that was hard on her too. She left in the morning before I went to school and arrived home later in the evening, after homework had been done. She was often tired and easy to anger. It was hard. My mom did the best she could with what she had.

As time went on, my aunt made the decision to move out and my mom was mom - full-time. I do remember my dad visiting a few times during those years. I met my brother (from my father). Unfortunately, there was a lot of bitterness in that situation with my mom toward my dad. It came out at times in her interactions with me. It came out in how she'd talk about him. I knew far too much as a young child about child support and what I was and was not receiving. It all kind of went over my head. As an adult, I realize now that none of that was my business. The only thing that I should have known about or had to care about was that I had a mom AND a dad who love me. The state of their relationship, how it ended, how my mom felt...for real, that was none of my business. A positive shift occurred when my mom, sister, and I moved away from my maternal family in Virginia.

All that being said - when I was about 12, there was a pivotal turning point in my relationship with my father. It was the summer before 7th grade and I went to visit him in Texas by myself. It was astonishing to see this man who I resembled so much. He had this (to me) big, nice house. And there was my stepmother. She is a very tall woman, very sophisticated, and in all honesty, I still see a lot of similarities between her and my own mother physically at least. My dad definitely has a type. What stuck out the most to me though, is that she was very kind to me. I have actually learned a lot from my stepmother that I still carry with me and I respect her a great deal. She didn't try to be my mom. She was just herself and she treated me with love. She respected me as my father's daughter and I know she loves him, so she just treated me with love.

But the important part of all that background? That visit, the things I was beginning to recognize in myself, showed me the importance of having a father. I don't remember really experiencing the yearning for a Dad until then or really understanding what that is. I had uncles and men in my life, but it's not the same. I was still awkward around men because I had never really experienced it. I didn't know how to conduct myself because I had never had a father in the home to show me.  And as I grew into a teen and a young woman, that awkwardness, that unsureness - it permeated my life. I began to understand then - a father is important because a father brings stability. A father helps you feel protected. I experienced various types of violation in my life and never felt safe.  I was always afraid. And while I had my mother and many other strong women in my life - a father is the strength of the house. This is what I learned as an adult Christian woman and I totally get it. I can say that some of the mistakes in my life that I made could be contributed to that absence, but I can also say that many of them were not. I believe everything that happened to me, my life, my circumstances - they are not meant to be something that I lament. No. It is just life. Life can be hard at times and we can't always control our circumstances, but one day, we can decide not to let those circumstances define us.

As an adult, I have a good relationship with my dad. It hasn't always been easy, but we are here. And I am thankful for him. In his eyes, I am still his little girl and little things he does, I see him wanting in some ways to make it for lost time. While it is too late for that, I look forward to seeing him be a grandfather to my children one day. I know now that despite circumstances and distance and differences of opinion, my father loves me. And while sometimes I wish he had the opportunity to truly "father" me, I am thankful for those men that did as best they could. I am thankful for God because He was and IS always present.

Now, I am married and through my relationship with God, a lot of healing is still taking place. God was so gracious to give me a husband who had his father. A husband who came to know the Heavenly Father as a teenager and who was mentored by a spiritual father. And I have so much hope for my future and the future of our children. I know that my children have a chance at a very different life. Both of their parents love God and as a result, know how to love one another properly (and are learning more and more each day), and will know how to love them. They won't have to know the fear I felt. They will have the certainty of the cross in their life. And where me and their father may fall short, God will be there to give them what we don't have yet or may not ever have. This is the greatest gift. My children will not just have a father, but they will that THE FATHER.

The Heart of the Matter

Like many, maybe like everyone at one time or another, I have felt misunderstood. As technology has gotten more prevalent, the possibility of misunderstanding has increased exponentially in my opinion. As an adult, I am learning to combat this by picking up the phone or talking to someone in person. I am beginning to recognize situations (at 30) where a text can be misconstrued or an email taken out of context. The thing is, it's difficult, even for the best writer to convey his or her heart in words. It is even harder to do it in 160 characters or less.

Paul did it well in his letters to the church in Corinth, Timothy, Titus,  and many others - but he had space to make it clear. Now in the age of the "right now" and the sound bite, it's much easier to appear callous, careless, or flippant in modes of communication that have become popular - many of which emphasize brevity and the avoidance of actual contact. I can't tell you how many times I've written and rewritten a text, trying my best to convey the heart of the matter as well as just the "facts".

So, when I happen to shoot off a text or email a second too soon before evaluating the implications - I lament the possibility of my intent,  my heart, being misunderstood yet again. Yes, it's a bit dramatic, but it's also a very real thing I grapple with regularly and truth be told, I think we all do. We write an email at work, send a text to our friend, get on our soapbox on Facebook - if we are conscientious, we want to make sure we really convey what we mean.

Just my musing.

A Heart of Flesh

I am purely musing here, with some biblical references,  so please walk with me for a bit. God wants us to have a heart of flesh, a heart that is not stoney, but malleable. And it seems simple,  but it's not at all. Especially in relationships,  especially when you've been hurt deeply.

So what do you do? I suppose we endure right?  God always means us well, even when we can't see it or feel it. The rain of life would make us flee, but in life and in relationships,  you can't be afraid to get wet.

Thirsty

Psalm 42:1 (KJV) -
"As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God."

So much change and so many decisions and I remember, it is written:
"I am Alpha and Omega", the "Beginning and the end"
You have put an end to so much sin in my life
Yet I thirst

More of you in me
More of you displayed
Radiating out like the Son
and I just want to be the one
That you want to rest upon

I thirst for more of you O God
And I am tired of mediocre
In You, I would like to be great
Glorifying you and being an example of the good things
You have done

I thirst.

More of your rain
Trim the dead branches
I'll forget the pain
If you would just reign...
In my heart, forever.

I thirst like the deer, oh, my soul thirsts
For more clarity
May your waters wash away
The confusion
The endless chatter
And distraction of every. day. life.

Lord, I need You
More today than I did the day I got saved
Lord, I thirst for more
Call me by my new name

Lovely
Beautiful
Holy
Clean

I thirst for You to manifest in me
Every gift given
May it flourish, good seed in fertile soil
Lord, water me.

May I be a tree planted in you
Roots deep
Not like feet planted in sand
Deep down
In the Heavens
My roots ascend
Up into You and what You set me here to do...

Lord, I thirst for You
Clear all the distractions
My attraction is to You

Wash away the remnants of defilement
The denial of every lie
Let it be replaced with Truth
I now belong to You

Let my pursuit after You
Be relentless
As Your Love for me
Free
Grace
Mercy
Given
me.

Holy Spirit
Thirsting for more
Of You, in me.

Deciding to Love

I am learning that love is a decision
It takes determination
It takes vision
Love means looking past the immediate
And seeing the completion
The maturity of a man

Love is much more perfect
The more we become like He who works perfection in us
He does that the more
We resist the lust -
Eyes, flesh, pride of life
I decide to love through the stressors of life

I'm determining to love through the pain
Even as you reject me
I'll decide to love again
And again I love as you hate the more
Heaping my love upon you like hot coals

And in loving,  I find my joy
Not in happenstance
Not in meaningless ploys

Because my source is one greater than me
The author of love
My God, Father, Savior, Spirit
Who delivered me

Trying to Let Go (Forgiveness)

This morning, I got up and I was thinking about my relationship with my mom specifically and I got angry all over again. And as we all know, anger is the blood descendant of hurt. Our relationship isn't good and in truth, hasn't really been in years, but especially so when I got saved.
At the end of the day, it's not about my mother, it's about me. Most of the time I'm fine. When I see her, I don't feel anger, but sometimes I feel apprehension because I'm unsure who or what I'm going to get.

At this juncture in life, I don't have much contact at all. I guess I'm just tired.

I want to forgive her for every thing.  I want to forgive myself for anything I may have done wrong. I need to forgive. I want to love in spite of. Unforgiveness is torment and I know it's a growth blocker. I'll continue to pray and please keep me in prayer as well. I just want the hurt to be gone.

A River Runs Through It

I received a word today about my life and I wanted to write it down, lest I forget! I am going to be coming out of obscurity. A river has separated me from my past! God is removing the old wisdom and replacing it with heavenly wisdom and I will be able to give an exact word and have a clear word. I am excited to see what God is going to do!

A river keeps my past at bay. On this shore, things are unfamiliar, they are new. I mention the transition that is taking place with me getting married and I realize that each experience is unique. Old things have passed away and each day, I meet this new woman that God is shaping and molding. Who is this woman? I'm not sure yet, but her last name is Gibbs :-)

Love...and a MARRIAGE!

As you can tell from the title of this entry - there's been a marriage! Mine! I married my best friend, love, and as another good friend put it, my "crush" a little over a week ago today. I won't be long, as my husband is already asleep next to me and I'd like to join in the obtaining of Zzzzs, but I am so excited still! One reason - I had a person close to me in my life that said things to me in my youth like, "you may end up alone" and basically to prepare myself for that possibility. It was spoken almost as a curse because the person's love life had not turned out well and since she kept reasoning that I was like her, my life was supposed to turn out the same. Let me balance the above with this - in Christ, some people are chosen to live a life of singleness and others decide to live a life of singleness, and this is not only okay, but honorable and acceptable before the Lord if you are able to keep yourself. Paul even says in 1 Corinthians, that he were that men would be as he was - single - because when you do get married, you then have to not only be concerned about pleasing the Lord, but also about attending to your mate.

It is also awesome to see God's word come to fruition. It was prophesied to me several years ago that I would marry and have a family. That put my spirit to rest on the topic because I knew it would happen in God's time. In the meantime, I didn't pine or wait, I just tried to live my life before the Lord the best way I knew how. God also spoke to me about my husband - two years before it happened. And well - it is so!

Marriage so far has been awesome, as has been this relationship. He takes me just as I am. Even when I feel bad emotionally, sickly, spiritually drained - this man has and does love me. When I am cranky, he is still loving. When I am silly, he is silly with me. He makes me smile all the time and picks with me relentlessly. He prays with me, prays for me, and seeks God for how to handle situations in general and with me. He provides stability and strength. He is a man I trust with my life - and this is why I married him.

I love waking up to my best friend. I love seeing his face each day. This has truly been a gift from the Father and I look forward to how it will grow and change through the years.

One more point before I log off - marriage has not resolved issues I had not dealt with before I got married. Those are still there. If anything, being in a relationship has illuminated them. I am glad that I have pastors that emphasize relationship with Christ first. There are things in me still that only God will be able to work out. Understanding this is paramount before entering into any relationship. A person will not resolve your issues. Only God can do that. Hopefully that person can be a listening ear, a help, a support - but God does the heavy lifting. At the end of the day, I must submit to my husband in everything as is fitting in the Lord, but we BOTH belong to God, who is the Creator of us all.

2013 - Wowsers!

I realized I don't think I've blogged in the new year yet! So, it's 2013! YAY! Just a recap - I've celebrated 3 decades on the planet (mere seconds to God) and I've got some new beginnings on the horizon. It's looking promising for both me and many people close to me. One of my best girlfriends/mentors/sisters in the Lord/fill in the blank - found out she's pregnant with her first child! It's SO good to see God's promises come to fruition not only in your own life, but in the lives of others. The Lord is just GOOD. I could say more, but I won't, but I'm very happy for her and excited. This baby is a child of promise and I'm so excited to meet this little person. :-)

God has been speaking to me and showing me things differently lately. But I'm glad He's heard my prayers to give me ears to hear and eyes to see. Some things have had my heart a little heavy as of late, but I know I'll have to make some decisions that will have a lasting impact. Now, along with the ears to hear and eyes to see, I'm also praying for wisdom in how things are handled. I do not want to act out of my flesh, but by God's directives. He has blessed me with the desires of my heart and I must continue to focus on Him in this time of growth and change.

Overall, I am excited and  happy and overwhelmed with the quickness of how God is moving to establish all He has spoken in my life and the lives of others.
